Do you want to break into fashion but don’t have experience or an internship secured for this summer or fall? You should build some fashion portfolio projects. And the great news is that you can start them from home – even without experience!
Most people wait to land an internship or job before they build their portfolio. Because they believe a portfolio should only contain real projects or real work you did at a real job in fashion. But the truth is — it works the other way around. Your portfolio is how you stand out and get opportunities in the first place.
And no, portfolios aren’t just for designers.
If you want to work in PR, marketing, buying, styling, or any other career, you CAN and actually, you SHOULD build a portfolio if you want to have more chances of getting into this industry and faster!
A portfolio is a visual representation of work related to skills that are aligned to the role you want to pursue. It can prove your potential, show your skills and help you land the position way more than a CV. It’s one of your best carreer allies!
So let’s see some fashion portfolio ideas you can do from home.
I’m going to share 3 portfolio ideas, which are based on real-world industry tasks — the same kind professionals work on at brands like Miu Miu, Kering, and Vogue.
And yes, you can create all of them from your bedroom; you just need a laptop, an internet connection, lots of passion for fashion (which I bet you have!), and a willingness to do the work.
If you need more guidance, individualized project review, and mentorship from industry professionals, we invite you to join our Summer Fashion Camp 2025: Your 8-Week Internship-Style Online Course from home with Real Projects, Industry Mentors, and a Portfolio That Stands Out.
Inside the Camp, there will be live and pre-recorded classes that teach the topics and projects I am about to show you. Register here for the waitlist, and meanwhile you can get familiar with them.
Fashion Project 1: Build A Trend Mood Board
Best for: Styling, Editorial, Buying, Marketing
- Analyze a fashion season (FW or SS), identify a trend( a color, silhouette, style..) and build a visual board that represent it.
- Add runway looks, fabrics, mood references, colors.
- Include a short write-up: What is the trend you identified and why?
Tip: Imagine pitching this to a trend team, a stylist, an editor of a magazine or buyer — how would you present it?
Fashion Project 2:Â PR Strategy for a Brand Collaboration
Best for: PR, Marketing, Brand Management, Communication, Digital Marketing
Brand collaborations are always an exciting moment, and this time, you get to organize one yourself! Miu Miu is collaborating with New Balance again, and you’re leading the rollout.
- Decide which media partners to pitch and how to create buzz online.
- Coordinate product gifting and placement opportunities.
- Plan the announcement strategy (teaser, reveal, influencer seeding).
Fashion Project 3: Build Your Own Mini Fashion Magazine
Best for: Fashion Editors, Creative Directors, Writers, Advertising Managers, Fashion Magazine Interns
A magazine that you created yourself? Yes it’s possible! Instead of just collecting your favorite issues on your coffee table or reading them online, you can build your own version of Vogue, Elle, or a brand new title.
Put yourself into the shoe of someone working at a fashion magazine, and create a 4–6 page mini mag on Canva or InDesign:
- Work on the visuals, layout, copy and finalize everything into a PDF.
- Build the masthead, decide who is the team you want to hire
- Decide which brands you want to pitch to have as advertisers
- Use AI to create a cover with a theme
- Write a trend article or style guide
You will be impressed by the result!
How to Present Each Project:
The final output of these portfolios will be a PDF. Imagine sending a professional portfolio PDF to recruiters alongside your CV when you apply. Or uploading this portfolio to your LinkedIn profile so when a recruiter lands on your profile, they see your work directly. They will be impressed by this professional PDF and the output of your work.
Follow this simple step-by-step:
- Use Canva or InDesign
- Include visuals, title slides, short explanations
- Save your document as a PDF
- Add your contact info so recruiters can reach out
Remember: it doesn’t matter if these projects are not from a real job.
If the output mimics a real fashion job, then for a recruiter it really doesn’t matter; they focus on the quality, not where it comes from.
Actually, if they see a project you built that looks like something you could have done in a job but you don’t have one yet, they will be so impressed by your competencies and your initiative, making it even more valuable! So focus on putting together one that looks professional and real.
