Had a job interview with a company? Congrats! You are one step closer to your dream job in fashion, but now what??

There is one more important step to get even closer to your dream job: sending a post-job interview thank you email.

When it comes to applying for jobs and the competition is very high, like in fashion where on average 500 people apply for the same job, the details make all of the difference in the success of your applications.

The way you structure your CV, how you write your cover letter, how you behave, and what you say during the job interview but also what you do after: recruiters look at all of these things. You might be convinced that they are just focusing on what you have on your CV, the school you went to, or your previous experience but it’s not like that. Nowadays, anyone can boast on their CV a degree or a master, is no longer the exception, it’s the rule and so recruiters look at things beyond a school to decide whether or not you could be the right person for the job. All of these details – the template of your CV, your cover letter, how you write your emails, and what you say during the job interview – reflect your personality and recruiters can already understand if you are someone who has the potential to grow inside the company, especially if you are at the beginning of your career.

Sending a thank you email is the extra touch and strong detail that will strengthen your interest in the position even more. Plus it’s a great way to be reminded by recruiters even after you leave the building or end the Zoom call.

So if you just had or you are about to have a job interview, don’t forget to send a post-job interview thank you email by following these 7 rules.

  1. Short and sweet

This email should be short and sweet so nothing too long. You don’t have to repeat who you are. You have to mention the job interview you just had so they know already about you. Remember, this is the email you use to strengthen your interest in the position, get noticed and leave a great impression.

  1. Send it whatever job interview you had.

It doesn’t matter if you only had a phone interview or a Zoom one for just 2 minutes, send a post-job interview thank you email whatever form of interview you had: phone, zoom, or in person. Don’t send it only to the top companies of the industry, but wherever company or person (for example if you have a job interview with a stylist to become her assistant).

  1. Thank people for their time

Of course a thank you email serves to thank people for something, but for what exactly? Only about 15 people over hundreds of applicants are normally selected for the first round of interviews, so you should be grateful and thankful for that.

You’d usually thank them for the chance to have a job interview with them and for having dedicated their time to you.

  1. Send it to anyone present

During a job interview with a fashion company, it happens that you’ll speak with different people: a couple of recruiters, your future boss, and some other people from your team. Send a job interview thank-you email to anyone you speak with, even if someone was just there listening and who asked just one question. Normally when you have a job interview with a company you have at least one email address of the person who invited you over for the interview and sent the details to you. If you don’t have the email addresses of the other people there, ask the contact you have, saying that you’d like to send them a thank you email.

  1. Send it the same day of the job interview

You should send the job interview thank you email within a few hours after your job interview, NOT after a day or more. Don’t send it immediately either, but take the time to reflect on the conversation. Get back home, go for a walk if it was a phone or Zoom interview, and let the tension drop so you can think more clearly and make better decisions.

  1. Tell why you are excited even more after the interview about the job

Normally during a job interview, you’ll learn more about the position (remember to ask some questions) and so the thank you email is your chance to show your enthusiasm for the job. You should have shown your passion for the company and the position already when writing your cover letter, but use the thank you email to share how excited you are about the position even more after your conversation. There is nothing better than hiring people who are super passionate about the job and the position. Companies prefer hiring people who don’t have all the skills but show off more passion over those who don’t show enthusiasm but have more experience, remember this. Your passion and enthusiasm are skills that companies look at, so with your post-interview thank you email, you have another chance to prove them.

  1. If you believe you missed some details or you wanted to say something different, this is your occasion.

It happens to be nervous during a job interview and maybe you forget to say something important or you would have preferred to say something different. You can use the post-interview thank you email to rephrase something or add information that you believe is important.
