As young professionals we look to different mediums for inspiration, one being books. We like to read stories of how people got to where they are and it motivates us to start on our own stories. These are just some of the many inspiring fashion books out there and not all these will appeal to everyone. Some go more in-depth on the business side of the industry and some are primarily photos giving inspiration for styling or editorials.
#Girlboss by Sophia Amoruso
You can’t possibly make a list of fashion books to read and not have this book on there. Girlboss was one of the first to really invoke the whole “girlboss movement”. This book is loved by all kinds of people, not just those in the fashion industry. Sophia Amoruso shares details of her life and the creation of her online boutique Nasty Gal. She shares her difficulties, and how she overcame them, plus how she unwittingly inspired others to go after what they want.
My Paris Dream by: Kate Betts
This book brings you along with Kate Betts on her journey to moving across the Atlantic Ocean to start a new life in Paris. Again this book goes through some trial and errors as she makes her way to become a Fashion Journalist. This book is a fantastic read with a coming-of-age story. I would highly recommend it especially to those in college or recent graduates. It’s a truly inspiring book about chasing after your dream and having to make sacrifices.
Leave Your Mark by: Aliza Licht
Probably my favourite fashion book, Leave your Mark is a must read book for all those girls out there striving to break into the industry and struggling with the HOW. Aliza Licht’s words of wisdom are perfect for those just entering the work force and are working on landing their dream job. She gives insider views on what the industry looks like and also tips on how to create your own opportunities and break through to the hard jobs.
The Vogue Factor by: Kirstie Clements
Kirstie Clements was the former Editor-In-Chief at Vogue Australia where she started out by working the front desk answering phones. This book highlights her hardwork and dedication to land one of the most sought after jobs in the industry. The Vogue Factor gives you the perfect visual on life in Vogue and the business side of the magazine. If you are seeking a job in the business side of fashion this read will inspire and motivate you to get started and make it happen.
Inside Vogue: A Diary Of My 100th Year by: Alexandra Shulman
Another inside look of the life in Vogue, Alexandra Shulman the former Editor-In-Chief of British Vogue, brings you along the crazy year celebrating and creating the 100th year issue. If you are looking for a career in publication or journalism this will be a valuable read for you.
Love Style Life by: Garance Dore
This book gives more than just style and life advice. It gives inspiration to those looking at a career in fashion and becoming an entrepreneur. Garance Dore shares her story on how she become a fashion illustrator and started her own blog. Another great read for young professionals or students.
Living In Style by: Rachel Zoe
If your an aspiring stylist this is the book for you. Rachel Zoe is a famous celebrity stylist who has conquered the fashion world not only in styling but also creating her own fashion line. This book covers all the “style” areas of her life whether it’s styling, home, or family.
Grace: A Memoir by: Grace Coddington
If you’re in the fashion industry you know who Grace Coddington is…and if you don’t then you SHOULD. She is known for making some of the most memorable fashion editorials as Creative Director at American Vogue. She has incredible vision and can execute all her extraordinary ideas for any editorial. This book goes through her young life and how she ended up at Vogue, and also gives you a look into her life at American Vogue.

If you liked Grace: A Memoir and have a love for fashion editorials then you will love this book. This book is full of pages showcasing her best work and will you give you tons of inspiration for styling and shooting your own fashion editorials.

If you’re looking on creating a blog or building/improving your personal brand this book will be a huge asset to you. Aimee Song goes through all her tips and trick on how she grew her following and created one of the best blogs, “Song of Style”. She teaches you how to properly take photos for your Instagram and how to become a fashion storyteller.
In Vogue: An Illustrated History of the World’s Most Famous Fashion Magazine
Not only is this the perfect coffee table book, it is also the perfect read for those Vogue lovers. In Vogue takes a look at the history of Vogue and how it got to be the phenomenon it is today. This book shows you some of the most renowned fashion photographers and models, and touches on every subject ranging from culture, art, fashion, photography and media.
