Stylist Hetty Appleton-Miles

A few days ago, I chatted with Hetty Appleton-Miles, Stylist at Burberry who moved to London from Australia 7 years ago. I had the pleasure to hear about Hetty’s inspiring career already in person in London as she was one of the industry professionals sharing her experience in fashion during the Glam Observer Fashion Panel. We have kept in touch since then and this year when we released our first list of The Observers: fashion professionals from around the world who are making and leading the fashion industry, and I added her to it as I am still inspired by her styling work at Burberry.

The Observers list appears in The Glam Observer Report 2022 which covers the most impactful moments that have made the fashion industry this year: from acquisitions and launches to sustainable efforts, who’s in & out at fashion brands, and the most remarkable fashion initiatives. We also feature the top fashion products, brands, and moments of the year. You can download the Report here.

Working with Burberry

Hetty’s main job as a stylist for the British brand is styling the looks for the Burberry website and some digital campaigns: from developing the concept with her director to styling up to overseeing the looks on set. Like any other person working in fashion, her working days are never the same.

From this chat, you’ll hear how she got started in the industry. And you’ll be surprised to learn that she started with no formal university education. Although in the podcast she says that educating yourself outside of a traditional degree is fundamental. Indeed, she took several online courses to understand more about fashion. I also asked about her tips for becoming a good stylist and if this is a career you want to pursue, you will be motivated to know that she believes that styling is a skill that you can practice through work experience and that you can acquire even if right now you believe you might not have it. We also chatted about her recent work trip to Paris, her favorite shows of the season, as well as how she separates her personal style from her styling work.

You can listen to this interview on the Glam Observer Podcast on Apple Podcasts and Spotify.
