Last month there was the first fashion career mentorship session with Kristina Rodulfo (4 years at Elle Magazine and now Beauty Director at the famous magazine Women’s Health Magazine) and the community adored it. It was pleasant but above all useful and motivating. Listening to the career stories of fashion industry professionals and being able to interact with them via the live chat is a unique and very useful career experience. Especially for those who are at the beginning of their careers and do not yet have any connection in the field, being able to interact with influential figures, talking to them and starting to understand how they should move in the sector is an extraordinary opportunity.
Today I am happy to announce the guest of the November session: Athena Petropoulos. With an exceptional resume, Athena began her career studying at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York and with two internships as Wholesale Intern at Issey Miyake and Jimmy Choo, she then joined Barneys as a buying intern where she remained for almost 5 years to become Buyer of the Women’s Private Label & Designer Shoes, until a week ago. Unfortunately, after the sad episode that impacted the legendary luxury department store chain, the corporate office’s last day was a week ago (after a two-month bankruptcy process, the new owners of Barneys are Authentic Brands Group and B. Riley Financial Inc. in a deal that will see most of the struggling luxury retailer’s remaining stores close and its name licensed to rival Saks Fifth Avenue).
We are going to talk about the role of the buyer, what are the main tasks of a buyer and the skills required, how to start your career as a buyer in a prestigious brand and how to progress a career in the same company starting from an internship. We will also talk about how she is moving now to look for her next fantastic career opportunity after her successful career at Barneys. This session will be full of information but also motivation on how to start a new career adventure in the fashion industry.
