Last week I chatted with Lateefah, Buying Assistant at ASOS about how to get a job in fashion with no fashion degree, previously with Kelly Harrington Vintage Archivist, Trend Researcher and Designer, and this week I’m chatting with Lauren Rae, Copy Editor at Mytheresa. When I research people to interview for the website or the podcast, I like to find diverse careers, voices and stories in fashion so you can see how the different departments of the fashion industry work and what are the career options you can explore.
Even though all the career paths, tasks and responsibilities are different, there is always something in common between all the fashion professionals: a strong passion for what they do.
Make sure you don’t miss any of these career stories and now let’s go to today’s story with Lauren Rae.
Lauren has relocated from London to Munich a few months ago for her new job as copy editor at Mytheresa. With all her years of experience writing both for fashion publications and brands and recently her book, we had a great chat on everything about fashion writing and copywriting.
I invited her on The Glam Observer Podcast to bring you her experience and show that writing about fashion doesn’t just mean writing fashion articles but you can work for brands and write copies for the newsletter or product descriptions.
When I applied for jobs they always made me do copy tests…. Before an interview, I look at the websites and try to rewrite the product descriptions and see how I would do it.
In this new podcast episode we talked about how she got into writing, what’s the difference between writing fashion articles and writing copies for fashion brands, what makes a great fashion article, what a workday looks like for her as the copy editor at Mytheresa and, since reading is a fundamental part of a writer’s career, when to add reading in your workday as a fashion writer.
In case you are interested in becoming a fashion writer and starting your freelance career working with fashion magazines I have for you a free webinar on the three things you need to start a freelance writing career in fashion.
In this free 40-minutes masterclass, we will see together the 3 absolutely necessary things you need to start as a freelance fashion writer (even if you don’t have any experience yet!), the most common fears that are stopping you to take actions (let me know if it sounds familiar that you think you can’t write for fashion magazines because you don’t have previous experience or you lack self-confidence) and why you get ignored by fashion publications when you propose your article ideas.
