If you want to work in fashion, a good way (and free) to start understanding how this industry works is to attend events and visit the various exhibitions in town.
Fashion week is a great time because everyone organizes parties, events and exhibitions and while the shows are by invitation only, there are some exhibitions that are open to the public after the official party.
Milan Fashion Week is coming soon (September 18-24th  2018), so mark all these events on the agenda and try to go to each one.
