Applying for a fashion job or internship is a standard, yet complicated and intimidating process. That’s why in addition to the daily tips you find on Glam Observer and with the new online course, I asked the recruiters working at LVMH, MyTheresa and Vogue to share their valuable advice for the perfect job application.

I asked them these 3 questions:

  • When do you call a person for a job interview?
  • What a candidate cannot go wrong with during the interview?
  • How do you suggest preparing for a job application?

When do you call a person for a job interview?

For me, it is the way the person makes that extra effort to create a resume that goes beyond the simple format. When I see that you have studied the position and so have highlighted relevant experiences and skills that count. Having worked as a waitress while in college makes you honor, but it’s not a relevant experience for me. Yet many still include it. [LVMH]

In the case of an internship, when a CV is still normally “poor” I give a lot of importance to the cover letter. It must be brief and concise and make me understand why you want to work with us, without being too obvious by simply saying” I like the brand”. If you were there in front of me, what would you tell me to convince me to hire you? Well, write it in the cover letter. [mytheresa]

When I receive a unique application. Once I called a girl for an interview because in addition to her well-done CV, she also sent me an example of how she would do a job. She invented a case study and attached it to the email as a PDF. [Vogue]

What you cannot go wrong with during the interview?

The awkward silence. Even if it is something that you do not know or have never done before or have not prepared an answer for, a silence of more than 10 seconds is not a good sign. What do you do if during a meeting they ask you something you can’t answer? You need to be ready to get by in every situation and I can’t hire a person who can’t get out. [LVMH]

You should not immediately ask for a salary especially if it’s an internship and neither how many days of vacation you have and if you people stay often after the office hours. [mytheresa]

You must not be undecided and too scared of the interview. You are here because you have a lot to offer, you will spend most of the hours of your life in the office, be confident but without being arrogant. [Vogue]

How do you suggest preparing for a job application?

Study the company before applying and make sure your CV and cover letter are personalized. [LVMH]

Studying the company is my main suggestion. Do some research on LinkedIn of who will be your future boss and your team. The more you know, the more personalized you can make your application. And write a good CV. You have only one chance, you can’t miss it due to a grammatical error on your CV. [mytheresa]

First of all, you need to identify the exact career path for you. If you are applying for a job that doesn’t fit you, it is easy for the application to fail for this reason. I need to know about you from the CV and the cover letter. When you write them, put yourself in the recruiter’s shoes, I know nothing about you. Add the emotional part linked to your passion in the cover letter and tell me why I should hire you, use the CV for the practical part and the skills. [Vogue]
