If you are dreaming to work in fashion but don’t know how to do and where to start from I can honestly tell you that the answer is just one: Interning.

Interning is for sure THE best way to start working in the fashion industry.  It not necessary to intern at your dream company to work there one day, your first step now is to gain some experience. If your dream company is Dior you don’t have to intern there to work with them in your life.

Building a bit of experience is a must to work in fashion and interning is the first and easiest way to do this. Big companies like Gucci, Dior, Chanel, are always looking for the most skilled people. So it’s really important you start somewhere to gain some experience. There are lots of intern positions that are always open and if you’re lucky enough, you’ll be paid a bit but if not I really suggest you to take this chance anyway. It’s all experience and it’s like investing your time like when you were in school. Are you paid to go to school? Consider your internship period as another step of your student life and for sure the most important one if you dream about working in fashion! You’ll learn more in 6 months of an internship than in all the years at school.

If you want to work in fashion you need to know how a fashion company is organized and what are the different jobs. Interning will help you to understand which is the right fashion job for you. You can start interning as an editorial assistant and then understand that you prefer a marketing position or the opposite.

I attended a Master in Luxury and Fashion Management and all of us who were in the same class started working in fashion by interning here and there.

Even if you have studied at the most prestigious fashion school, starting as an intern is mandatory if you want to work in fashion. In most of the cases, lots of interns do jobs that usually the senior people should have to. This is not good for your paycheck or your job title on your CV but you’ll learn A LOT!

I also personally started working in fashion as an intern so I can honestly tell you that you’ll learn more than you think. What I suggest you is to try to understand also what the others are doing in the office and if you have completed your daily tasks, ask someone else if you can help so you’ll learn also a bit of his job. Be always willing to help everyone, you’ll never know if anyone knows someone who will help you with your career in fashion in the future.

If you have still not finished your college, interning during summer, or just during the weekend is a great idea. There are some internships for students where you’ll have to work there only 2-3 times a week.
