How to add a new income stream and earn extra money writing for fashion magazines?

In this unprecedented period the key to surviving as I said in this article, is to become flexible, creative and reinvent the way you work. 

This global crisis has messed up everyone’s plans: there are people who have seen their internship canceled or postponed, others who are working from home, those who were in the middle of the job search but now don’t know when they will be able to get into a fashion office. Even if there are things we are not able to control such as when this pandemic will really be over, you must focus on the things you are in control of. 

As I said in this article, you don’t have to wait for the pandemic, but you still have to apply for your favorite fashion jobs and internships even if you already had something in your hand before the lockdown to be safe. Don’t wait for the recruiters you were having job interviews with or that postponed your internship, to call you back after the pandemic. This is an unprecedented time so we don’t know how each company is going to react. We hope that recruiters will call you back to continue with the job interviews or that they will call you to say that your internship can start now. But what if these companies are having trouble and can’t guarantee anymore a job for you? You need a plan B. Hope is not a strategy. That’s why you should keep applying for jobs even if you were in the middle of job interviews or if you had secured an internship that got postponed but that you don’t have any news from. 

However, there is also something else that you could do together with applying for jobs and preparing drafts of your applications to submit asap (in this article I suggest to apply for the jobs who are open and to prepare everything you need to apply and save them as drafts for all your favorite brands that have paused their application, so you’ll be ready to apply asap). 

As I said the key is to reinvent your work and be creative and flexible. 

There is something that you can do from home to add a new stream of income or even just to grow a bit of experience to add to your CV, while waiting for your job or internship to start at the end of the lockdown:  writing fashion articles for different online fashion publications. 

Writing fashion articles is not something that should do only those who want to become full-time fashion editors and work as fashion journalists. Of course, if you want to start a career as a freelance fashion writer or want to work at a fashion magazine you must write fashion articles in order to get the job, but even those who want to work in another field such as styling or PR or other can take this time at home to write fashion articles to make some money or even just to build some experience and create new connections.

If you aim at getting a job in marketing, you should write articles related to fashion marketing. While if you want to become a freelance fashion writer or get a job at a fashion magazine you should experiment with a bit of everything considering what publications you want to write for. If you want to write for Business of Fashion, you should write about the business side of the industry, while if you want to write for Vogue you might write about the latest trends. 

So writing fashion articles is useful:

1. if you want to become a freelance fashion writer and make it your full-time career of course
2. if you want to work in another field (buying, styling, social media, pr, marketing…) and you want to add a new experience to your resume, show your expertise, grow your connections with the publications and with anyone who reads the article, and also earn extra money

So whether you want to make a living from it or just add a new stream of income not only now during this pandemic, but even in the future (there are many people who work in other fields and are passionate about writing that they do both by writing during the weekend for example)  writing fashion articles is an excellent choice.
