Very often, the lack of experience is what makes aspiring fashion professionals get stuck in their job search. This could be the reason why you too can’t land a job in fashion.
But hereās a truth most people donāt talk about in fashion: The reason youāre not landing a job or internship isnāt your empty resume. It’s not because you didn’t go to fashion school or didn’t take several internships or jobs. Itās because youāre waiting. Waiting for permission. Waiting for someone to choose you.Waiting for theĀ rightĀ internship to finally show up.
Stop waiting
I always recommend those without experience to start with internships. However, HOW you get that internship is what often tricks people. They think that first, they have to land the internship to get experience. But it doesn’t have to be this way.
Those who land a job in fashion (faster) and without experience… are not waiting.
While most companies don’t require previous experience for total beginners, it doesn’t mean they don’t want to see your passion and skills. They look for candidates who can contribute from day one. And you don’t need to wait to start an internship or job to start contributing and showcase your potential. Let me tell you about my experience.
How I broke into fashion without experience
Thereās a moment Iāll never forget from when I applied to Alexander McQueen. The recruiter looked at my resume and said:
“You kept yourself busy during your summers. We appreciate the initiative, the proactive approach. Everyone has a Masterās or a fashion degreeā¦ we go beyond that.“
“These courses and personal projects you pursued on your own? They show us youāre serious. You have the kind of potential weāre looking for.“
This comment changed everything for me, as I got hired at AMQ!Ā Never have I ever would have imagined that some online courses I took during the summer would’ve been my golden ticket. But it happened because that’s exactly the proactive approach recruiters are looking for.
Start building your own fashion experience
So what if this summer, you stopped waiting… andĀ started building your own fashion experience?
While others are waiting for internships, you can use this summer to take online courses and build your own projects to that will enhance your resume and portfolio.
For example, if you want to become a fashion editor, you can use Canva to build your own mini magazine and write a few articles. If it’s PR or event management, you can conceive a fashion show by choosing your venue, the models, the guest list…As an aspiring fashion buyer, get on Vogue Runway and build a trend mood board for the next season.
My point is: whatever your dream role in fashion is, you can get your hands busy during the summer and build some practical fashion experience from home if you haven’t secured an internship this summer. If you are ready to take initiative, I can help you with that!
