Changing career paths can be a daunting task whether it’s diving into a new industry or even simply changing career paths in your current industry. There are more and more people changing their careers later on in life or even changing careers for the 4th time and that’s completely fine. It’s not easy jumping into a new job with potentially different skill sets, responsibilities, and challenges. Don’t let a little adversity stop you from changing things up a little, however you must also be willing to make sacrifices. Here are some tips and advice for how to change careers paths.
Network/Connections
In industries like this it is important to make good connections and network as much as possible in all areas of the industry. In your current job not only make friends but make a good impression to your boss and your peers…if they know you’re a hard worker and passionate about your work they will most definitely help you out in the future. Another great way to network is through social media, join groups on Facebook or Linkedin within your desired speciality, reach out and engage with people on Twitter or Instagram. Even reach out and email some people you find on social media and ask them for any advice, tips, or even just what it’s like working in that career. The more you know about your new career choice the better, and making more connections is an additional bonus!
Know Your Strengths and New Skills Required
Knowing your skills and what you need to improve on is very important. To get any job we know you need to show an employer your skills so knowing how to address your strengths and also figuring out how your strengths will help you in your new career. When applying for new jobs explain that with your knowledge of different areas can benefit them and their company and you have a lot to contribute.
Educate Yourself
After you do your research on what new skills you require hit the books…or the web! Enrol in an online course, read as books you can around your desired subject, or anything that can help grow your knowledge. Similar as if you were just coming into the industry fresh you need knowledge and experience.
Internships
I know what you’re probably thinking…”I don’t want to do anymore internships”, but the truth is changing careers is almost like starting over, you require hands-on experience to snag a good job. Unfortunately you can’t just jump around different areas in fashion with no experience in that job, the industry is so big that the jobs and skills required vary drastically. However, your knowledge on the overall operation of the industry will give you an advantage. Remember I started with saying you will have to make sacrifices? Going back to unpaid or little paid work will be a huge sacrifice if you want to switch careers. Hopefully you won’t need to intern for very long because of your previous experience.
A piece of advice I have for you is look within your current company you work for, talk to your supervisors and explain your desire to change careers. Most companies are really good about hiring internally and helping out their current employees, then after you gain experience you can either branch out on your own or climb the latter at your current company.
