Not everyone decides to go into fashion in the first place. Even though most of the people who love fashion decide to start their careers in this field directly, there is a good percentage of people that go into other industries first and then decide to switch careers and go into fashion later. If you are among those people and you have decided you want to do a career change from another industry into fashion, then keep reading.
Whatever is the industry you are working now, you can change and go into fashion if this is your passion. How to do this career change depends on your current level of experience. Some people are still at the beginning of their career in another industry so they can start all over from scratch in fashion and get a fashion internship. Others are a bit older and can’t intern anymore so they have to learn how to transfer their current experience to fashion. To understand how to do so, I’ve chatted with someone who has gone through this: Mia Lardiere Snapchat Editor at Cosmopolitan has changed her career from television to fashion.
Mia didn’t plan to work in fashion, she wanted to be a tv writer. Her first internship was in television, but then she noticed that all the jobs in tv available were not what she was looking for.
Once she graduated she applied for many jobs but didn’t get one, so she had to go back home with her parents. In the meantime, she started writing for different publications like Man Repeller and other websites and in a short time, she went from writing about celebrities to interviewing at cosmopolitan.
In this podcast episode, we chat about:
- how she was able to transition her previous experience in another industry to fashion
- how to approach fashion professionals to help you out with your career
- how many interview steps she went through at Cosmopolitan
- the pressure of the fashion industry
- how to go from assistant to editor and ask for a rise
- what you need to get a job like hers at a fashion magazine
- and much more
This episode is full of many amazing tips and Mia is such a kind-hearted person so I suggest listening till the end!
