January is the month of new beginnings. We have all made the list of new resolutions and this year we have promised ourselves once again to realize them. So rather than leaving them on a piece of paper, it’s time to start acting to turn what we want into reality. The biggest problem is that most of us are waiting for what is set for us to happen by chance. For some things, it could also happen if luck is on your side, but if you want to see all your goals achieved, the truth is that you have to work on it because nothing comes by chance. Therefore start by turning your dreams into concrete plans to achieve them, and every day, take actions that lead you to goals. Some may be more difficult to do, but it is when we leave our comfort zone that we begin to see results.

If one of your resolution of the year is getting a job in fashion, move into another role or start your first fashion internship then in this article you’ll know what you need to do. As said before, start every day to do something that takes you to the goal. Here’s what to do to get a fashion job in 2019.

1. Update your CV

The first thing to do to get a job in fashion is to apply by submitting your cv. BUT before doing so, update your CV and improve it. The purpose of the cv is to get you the job interview that could take you to your new fashion job. If your CV is not on point, you will not get the interview and then you will not get the job. The structure of the CV is one of the most important parts so update the graphics of your resume and make it personalized (take a look at our templates, they are ready to be used easily with Microsoft Word and are approved by fashion companies! Some girls who have used them have passed the first phase and got an interview with major fashion companies such as Valentino and Dolce & Gabbana). From this year try to adjust your CV every time depending on the positions and companies for which you are applying. Emphasize your previous experiences that are in common with those of the new positions and add the keywords of your new job in the descriptions of your past experiences.

2. Grow your network

Knowing the right people is essential in the fashion industry. Internships and networking have become even more important than the school you attended to get a job in fashion. Knowing many people will open up more job opportunities. It is obvious that if we know about a new job offer, the first ones we tell are our friends and our network. Build your network so people think of you when they learn about new opportunities in their companies or hear them for word of mouth.
Networking seems like an impossible thing and surely, meeting new people is on your resolutions list for 2019 but probably, to make it happen, you are waiting for someone to knock on your door. This year you take the step: try to meet at least 2 new people a month. Start with Instagram or LinkedIn and then take courage to send the scary message you ask to meet for coffee. Once you overcome that rock, you will see that everything will be easier and after your meeting, you will be satisfied and proud of you for having done something you thought you would never have done, plus you have contributed to your career at the same time. Pretend to be that self-confident person who is not intimidated by knowing new people, who always knows what he wants and what to say in every situation. You will see that in the end, you will not have to fake it anymore 😉 If you want to get a job in fashion this year, take a look at our membership program, thanks to our Facebook and Whatsapp groups and our networking events, meeting new girls in the industry has never been easier! All the members are super friendly and helpful, you will love being part of the community! Consider our annual plan, it’s the cheapest and most complete, and stay quiet throughout the year. So you can tick off your good intentions to improve your career and meet new people 😉

3. Improve your skills

Your learning process does not end when you graduate. If you want to be successful, get a job in fashion and be prepared you’ll never have to stop learning. There is always something new or something in which you can specialize. Photoshop, social media, how to create a website, photography, styling … give a boost to your knowledge not only to enrich your cv and be qualified for a position, but also for yourself. How amazing it is to be able to know about lots of things and to always answer, “Yes, I’ll take care of it” ?

4. Build your personal branding

Having an online presence is absolutely essential today and if you want to get a job in fashion, start posting fewer photos of your dogs and cats that are surely adorable, and post content relevant to the industry. Building an online personal brand serves to show others your industry knowledge and interest. Consider your social media as your portfolio and even better if you can add them to a blog. Set up your LinkedIn profile and start being active by sharing relevant fashion articles and connecting with industry professionals. LinkedIn is also the perfect place to look for your next job. Fashion companies use it a lot to post new offers and also to look for candidates. So set up your profile and you will receive a message from some recruiter 😉 Instagram is also a powerful tool. All the recruiters today check your social profiles before hiring someone. So make sure your Instagram and Facebook profiles are professional. If you want to become a social media manager, your feed should be almost perfect, because it should be an encouraging example for companies that show your skills in the role. The same applies if you want to become a photographer, publish only your best shots and if you want to become a stylist, post your best looks. “Fake it until you make it” is so true when it comes to social media.

5. Apply!

Obviously, the best way to get a job in fashion is to apply! Do not be afraid to apply because you think you are not qualified. You don’t have to meet all the job requirements. If you meet 4/9 requirements apply anyway. Nobody will come knocking at your door accusing you of wasting their time, the worst that can happen is that no one will call you for the interview. But if someone sees in you a potential even if you do not have all the requirements, then you will lose an opportunity if you do not apply. And this year among the good intentions we have decided not to miss any chance! Apply to all the positions that interest you and also to those that are similar to the position of your dreams. Many times it is easier to enter the company with another role and then change job later. Consider even the smallest companies and not just the big names in the industry because they can bring great benefits. Here you can find the difference of working for a startup or a big fashion company.
