Whether you want to get into the fashion industry or you are at the beginning of your career, then you probably know by now that social media is like your business card that you show to the world. Indeed, this is a must in order to look professional. But what if you could take your social media to the next level by revealing in it your passion for fashion?
Have you ever been asked or anticipated with anxiety that famous question “Why do you want to work in fashion?” and thought “Because I love fashion”, or maybe you don’t know the right words to answer it? Well, on your Instagram, Tik Tok, or any other social platform, you have the time and space to dive into the subject.
Your personal brand is not only about showing pictures of moments of your life; it is also about communicating different sides of your personality and expertise, and in this particular case – your interest and knowledge about the fashion industry. You are an individual with your own set of characteristics, interests and experiences. You are unique and talented, so why not show it?
Of course, you do not have to be an open book and treat your account as if it was a blog (unless you want to!), but if you share some of your opinions, insights, and inspirations, you evoke emotions in people, and they begin to trust you. The potential recruiter will be able to get a sense of the person you are from what you post, thus reducing the doubt of whether you have as much passion and knowledge of fashion as you say. Moreover, this could be that one little thing that makes you stand out among other applicants!
Now, how do I do that?
8 ways to share your passion on your social media
The first thing you want to do is unpack your personality and expertise. Whatever fashion career you are pursuing, find ways to demonstrate your interest and knowledge of it. If you are an aspiring stylist, you could post pictures of your outfits and share tips about styling them. If buying or merchandising is appealing to you – try sharing trends or your insights from the fashion week reports you found online. Being an editor seems like a dream job? Showcase your talent by writing engaging posts and sharing articles you wrote for some magazine, or even for yourself. Talk about your dream career and why you like it so much. Possibilities are endless! Make sure people see your spark.
The second aspect you should pay attention to is the visual part of your blog or personal account. We are people, and we have eyes – especially in the fashion industry where aesthetics are so important. Whatever account you do use, make sure it looks at the very least professional enough to have potential employers looking at it. But if you are afraid to seem too boring, you could, additionally, play with the images and aesthetics to reveal your taste in fashion. Pay special attention to your feed, because sometimes a picture is worth a thousand words.
Finally: the content. Content is the message that you convey to your audience through stories, reels, highlights, posts – and even the header. What message do you want to send to someone working in the fashion industry – for example, your potential recruiter? Make sure at least some of the information on your profile is fashion-related.
So, what kind of topics can I talk about?
- Tell about your dream career and highlight there relevant skills and knowledge you have about it – the same way you would do in your resume or cover letter, but in a more fun, dynamic and engaging way through social media. Experiment with different tools until you find the one you are comfortable with.
- Share with the world about fashion courses you have taken, books you have read, and movies you have watched. Instead of merely saying “I love to read fashion books and magazines and watch fashion documentaries”, try sharing your opinion about them, what you learned and how they influenced your perception of the fashion industry. Here you have more space to dive into the subject and prove that you are constantly learning.
- Talk about your educators and mentors who gave you a certain knowledge about fashion. It may be an influencer, a professional’s career path you admire, or a lecturer in a course. Who inspires you?
- What are your favorite designers and brands? What collection completely amazed you? Feel free to repost photos you found on social media, magazines, or websites.
- Finally, if there is an article that caught your attention, you can also repost it, and eventually comment on it. This way, you will show your audience what subjects and aspects of fashion matter to you.
As you can see, there are many topics and ways to express what exactly you love about fashion.
