It is 8 am on the last Friday (and day) of September. Anna Wintour and Pharrel Williams are at the microphones to announce to the fashion industry, gathered in Karl’s Photo Studio (untouched since his death in 2019) in Paris during Fashion Week, the theme of the Met Gala 2023 Costume Institute Exhibition: Karl Lagerfeld: A line of beauty.
The Met Gala, held every year on the first Monday of May, is one of the most important events in the fashion industry. The Met Gala officially launches the spring exhibition Costume Institute Exhibition.
The party dress code of the Met Gala is usually themed to the exhibition. In 2022 the exhibition theme was “In America: An Anthology of Fashion,” which is the second of star curator Andrew Bolton’s two-part show exploring the roots of American style. (Part One was “In America: A Lexicon of Fashion”). The dress code was “gilded glamour.”.
Met Gala 2023 : Karl Lagerfeld A line of beauty
The 2023 Costume Institute Exhibition will officially be Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty to remember the life and legacy of an icon.
Karl Lagerfeld who tragically passed away in 2019 following complications from an ongoing battle with pancreatic cancer, had an unparalleled career in the fashion industry that spanned decades and maisons.
From 1954 (when he shared the Woolmark Prize with another emerging designer named Yves Saint Laurent) until his death, Karl Lagerfeld produced unsurmountable works for Balmain, Patou, Chloé, Fendi, Chanel, and his own eponymous brand.
Karl Lagerfeld is known for his sketches. In many interviews, he said that he could sketch even before he could talk or walk. The Met Costume Exhibition 2023 will look at the evolution of Karl’s two-dimensional drawings into three-dimensional garments. The exhibit will display 150 original looks—from all the houses he served, as well as his own line— alongside their respective original sketches.
The Met Gala 2023 will be on Monday May 1st and the exhibition Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty will be open from May 5 through July 16 2023.
The exhibition will be mainly sponsored by Chanel while major support will further be provided by Fendi. Karl Lagerfeld the fashion brand and Condé Nast will add additional funding.
Together with the excitement for this exhibition that is set to be one of the most iconic ever, we are all looking forward to seeing what celebrities and industry insiders will wear on the red carpet. The red carper of the Met Gala is always a huge moment for the fashion industry. We expect guests will be wearing only Chanel, Fendi and Karl Lagerfeld but we are all excited to see who is going to wear what.
Great post!
