In a world fuelled by the giants of the Silicon Valley, everything goes by their rules: fashion, lifestyle, social sphere and job search, too. Whether you are a fresh graduate looking to make the first step into an industry, or an established professional open to a new challenge, soon you’ll find out the importance of having well-developed social media accounts.

Your CV is up-to-date and your cover letter concise, ready to be sent to that list of great companies you made. Everything seems perfect for the job search to start, but definitely, you are not prepared to click on that Send button just yet. Read below our top three tips for turning your social media accounts into the best virtual version of yourself and get the job you want.

1) GET A LINKEDIN FIX

First point and the most important one, when deciding to start searching for a new job, make sure your Linkedin profile is up-to-date and looking professional. This is the first thing an employer checks about you when shortlisting your CV for the next stage (usually an interview). They obviously want to learn more about the candidate they are going to meet or hire, and the best way to do so is by taking a look at their Linkedin profile. If your account is messy, out-dated and has a picture of you and your friends in Ibiza back in 2008, they might get the impression that you are not a focused professional.

2) SHOW ONLY WHAT YOU WANT THEM TO SEE

The average professional in Europe has at least two social media accounts. Besides Linkedin, make sure that everything else (from Facebook to that old Polyvore account you no longer use) is set up as private. Show your employer only what you want them to know: that you are a serious and motivated professional – no need for them to learn about your alcoholic New Year’s Eve party or the summer holidays.

3) USE SOCIAL MEDIA AT YOUR ADVANTAGE

Eyes open, as many companies now use social media accounts to advertise vacancies! Some pillars, like Condé Nast and Time Inc., advertise jobs and internships on their Instagram and Twitter pages. It almost gets impossible to miss even one opportunity!
