The archive of members exclusive articles, is full of super practical tips on everything you need to know in order to start a career in fashion, how to structure your CV, how to approach the interview, how to network and everything you need to get started and turn your career into a success.

Today’s post is just as special and contains information that only a very few know, but which is very useful especially at the beginning of your career in fashion because it will give you the opportunity to enter in a fashion company, even if you don’t work there to find out what you like 😉

Yes, there is a way to see how a working day in your favorite fashion company looks like: it is called work / job shadowing and consists of observing a fashion professional for a couple of days at work, to see which activities are involved in his or her everyday working life. These job shadowing opportunities allow you to observe a particular job figure that interests you, to understand if, in reality, it is what you like to do and above all to understand what you will be dealing with once you arrive at the office.

Many people get fascinated by the job title, but when looking for a job, you have to pay attention to the job description and deepen it during the job interview, to see what are your responsibilities and daily activities. Each company has its own structure and a Job Title can have different responsibilities depending on the company. So don’t trust that if you know what a Marketing Manager who works in a company is dealing with, you also know what the same figure does in another company.

Job shadowing generally lasts from a couple of hours to a maximum of a couple of days/1 week. You’ll see the person carrying out his or her normal daily activities and you will be able to follow him or her even in meetings. It’s a great way not only to better understand a certain position, but it’s also useful in terms of networking if you can make the most of your time in the company. You could establish a relationship with that person, his or her team and others within the company.

How do you find a Job Shadowing opportunity?

Not all companies talk about them explicitly, so with the exception of some such as Glamor UK which publishes about these opportunities on the website, you have to contact the company directly to ask about these opportunities. If you are still at university you can ask the coordinators if they have any contacts, otherwise, you will have to make a list of your favorite companies and jobs and start sending emails. If you know someone who works at a company, you can ask them. However, before reaching out to people, you must already have a clear idea of the person you want to support based on the role he/she has and that interests you.

In general, it is more common for students or those who have recently graduated, however also adults can ask for job shadowing opportunities in case of a career change.

Every company and person you will work with is different, but in general prepare a few questions to ask and choose the best time to do it, perhaps at the end of the day, during your lunch break or when there is a moment of calm. Take a notepad with you for notes, email contacts or other useful information that at that moment seems obvious but that you will probably forget as soon as you get home because of the many information absorbed in that short time.

Do not harass the person with too many questions, and do not disturb during the critical moments of the day. Job shadowing is more a kind of favor offered to you, so be very grateful to the person and prevent them from asking you not to come the next day because you have slowed down his/her work. If you are lucky, the person you work with will explain to you step by step what he/she is working on and he/she might even ask you to help, so it could be a great opportunity to learn something.

When asking for a job shadowing opportunity, send an email with your resume, introduce yourself and explain why you would like to work alongside that person and what benefits you take. Always be kind in the mail and thank everyone once this period is over. Add the people you meet to your LinkedIn network and cultivate these connections because you might ask or a job soon.
Be kind to everyone and show yourself curious but respecting the space. Your goal is not only to learn but also to make a good impression with everyone, because after a couple of weeks you could receive a job offer / internship😉
