In the dynamic landscape of the fashion industry in 2023, a series of transformative events unfolded, reshaping the narrative and pushing the boundaries of creativity, sustainability, and strategic business moves. The fashion industry was characterized by a blend of luxury experiences and creative transitions. It had a commitment to sustainability, and exciting collaborations, setting the stage for continued evolution in the years to come.
Luxury brands made an indelible mark on the industry. Kering’s acquisition of a 30% shareholding in Valentino standing out as the biggest deal of the year. Recognizing the evolving desires of their clientele, fashion houses embarked on a journey beyond fashion. They ventured into hospitality and fine dining.
From the beaches of Saint Tropez to the opulent Palazzo Avino, fashion houses such as Gucci, Valentino, Jacquemus, Dior, and Fendi opened beach clubs, providing customers with memorable moments that go beyond the act of purchasing fashion items.
The industry witnessed significant changes in creative director appointments. Pharrell Williams took on the role at Louis Vuitton Men, injecting his unique perspective into the brand. After an impressive 26-year tenure, Sarah Burton departed Alexander McQueen, leaving a void in the iconic fashion house. Sabato De Sarno made his debut as the creative force behind Gucci. His first collection presented in Milan in September.
Notably, renowned designer Phoebe Philo entered a new chapter, unveiling her namesake brand—a much-anticipated return that promised fresh perspectives.
Amidst the glamour and creative transitions, sustainability took center stage as a resounding theme. Vestiaire Collective emerged as a bold advocate against fast fashion, banning such items. They were championing a circular and responsible approach to fashion consumption. This decision resonated with the industry’s growing commitment to environmental consciousness, reflecting a broader trend toward fostering a sustainable ethos in 2023.
Collaboration remained a driving force, exemplified by notable partnerships like Donatella Versace teaming up with pop sensation Dua Lipa. These collaborations have the goal of creating buzz and excitement around innovative collections.

Results were decided by a team of experts of the Glam Observer team, as well as the opinions of our audience of more than 100,000 fashion enthusiasts that we reach weekly via Instagram, the website, and our emails.
We collected data and reflected on what happened this year to put out the most comprehensive information about the industry.
