When I was in college, I was studying management engineering, but I already had a huge passion for the fashion industry. I didn’t choose to study fashion because I wanted something broader that could open different doors just in case I would have changed my mind about fashion. So I decided to take a more traditional degree and study fashion in other ways. As you can imagine, a management engineering degree is not the easiest one. I was having classes every day from 8am to 7pm. When I didn’t have classes I had exams and so Summer and specifically August (my exam session was up until July) was finally the time of the year when I had more time to pursue my passion and learn more about the fashion industry.

If you’ve been reading this website for a while now, you already know that I was not born in a fashion capital.

I moved to Milan only after my graduation. So the only way for me to study fashion at that time in my city where there were no fashion schools, was to take fashion courses online. I took many short online courses about fashion throughout college and also the summer I graduated. They all helped me understand more about the fashion industry but not only. They also helped me land the job! Keep reading to know how.

Once I graduated, I moved to Milan to take a master’s in Luxury and Fashion Management. During each summer break, I made it a point to dive headfirst into the fashion world. I took online fashion courses and worked on personal projects like starting a fashion blog or sketching fashion illustrations. Ah, those were the days! It was my way of staying connected to my true passion while pursuing my management engineering degree. And you know what? It paid off big time!

Not only did learning about fashion ignite a fire within me, but it also became a game-changer for my career.

Before I completed my one-year master I decided to start applying for some fashion internships. Because I knew that fashion was so competitive plus I didn’t have connections, I had a management engineering degree and no fashion experience, I tried unconventional strategies to land an internship. I do talk more about those strategies in this free webinar

The strategies worked. I applied for 3 internships, got 3 job interviews, got all of the 3 internships, and I was lucky to chose my dream role at Alexander McQueen as eCommerce intern. It was such a moment for me! I was so surprised that the strategies I used worked. And that I got 3/3 jobs without a fashion degree, no fashion experience, no connections
I was so afraid that I was not enough and that companies would have never considered me with my management engineering degree. But I then realized that all those fears were only living in my head.

The reason why I started Glam Observer in 2014 was in fact to spread the light about the truth about the fashion industry and help all the fashion enthusiasts like me and you if you are reading this, who wants to get into fashion but have many doubts, fears and need guidance.

Once I got the internship I found myself chatting with the recruiter who hired me was beyond impressed by my dedication to fashion during those summer breaks.

She told me something quite interesting that changed my perspective forever and that I’ve shared with you to help you as well since then:

“We didn’t hire you because you will soon get a master’s in luxury and fashion management. We saw something in you from the way you applied for this job but also for these online courses you have on your resume. At Kering we are used to receiving hundreds of resumes daily from people graduating from the top schools, for us this is the standard, and a master’s is no longer the exception. What stands you apart are your unique interests and passions. The online courses you took showed us you had a strong and genuine interest in these topics. A degree is something you HAVE to do to get a job these days, but these online courses you took, are 100% a choice. The self-learning experience showed us you really care, you are proactive and you have the potential to grow which is what we look for in candidates.”

By taking online courses during the summer, I wanted to learn more about fashion and acquire new skills. But I didn’t imagine that they would have such a significant impact on the hiring decision. Nor even I imagined that they would have been considered even more than my master’s in luxury and fashion management. But in the end, they resulted to be key for me to entering the fashion industry because they showed my commitment and drive for the fashion industry and demonstrated that my passion for fashion was more than just a hobby.

And this set me apart from other candidates.

And because this self-learning experience helped me so much to grow personally and expand my skills but also impress recruiters now I want to offer you this same kind of experience so you can too take advantage of this and get the same or even better results for your career in fashion. I completely understand the desire to showcase your love for fashion to recruiters especially if you don’t have experience yet. That’s why I’m thrilled to finally share the news I anticipated last with you!
