Today, I wanted to share with you what happened during my job interview for my e-commerce internship at Alexander McQueen.

What Happened at My Job Interview With Alexander Mcqueen

10 years ago, I broke into the fashion industry with an eCommerce internship at Alexander McQueen. And the application process was very interesting. I got invited to a first job interview that was a generic one. And then I was called for the second step of the job interview. I was told it was going to be very similar to the first one. But with other people from the team and a recruiter. But when I went there that morning, the recruiters put me in front of a laptop with an Excel sheet open in front of me with a database and they asked me to calculate a couple of things.

And guess what – I passed the test, and got the internship thanks to my knowledge of Excel!

So I guess my personal story is the reason why my advice to you, aspiring fashion professionals, is to always be prepared to get tested on Excel by recruiters, but most of all, I encourage you to learn it because it’s the most common skill shared by 90% of fashion jobs. Indeed, everyone in fashion uses Excel – from the fashion intern to the CEO. And while it’s essential for analytical roles such as buyers or merchandisers, it’s also used and requested in all the other roles – even the most creative ones – such as stylists, writers, and designers.

Excel is an incredibly powerful tool that can help you stay organized, analyze data, and make informed decisions. Once you learn how to use it, (which can be fun and fast, by the way) Excel will be like your best friend to help you do your job better.

I am sharing more about my experience using Excel and how it can help you land a job in fashion in my latest podcast episode. Listen in on Apple Podcasts or Spotify.
