Most times when you’re dreaming about working in fashion you don’t dream about having a career in men’s fashion…it’s just a fact.  Girls dream about surrounding themselves with gorgeous and extravagant clothing, not in a closet filled with suits, but I don’t think they realize the true benefits of working in men’s fashion.  It might not be as big and glamorous as ladies fashion with huge extravagant dresses but it’s for those who have an excellent eye for detail. Men’s fashion is subtle, and what makes an outfit isn’t how exotic it is, it’s about the little simple details.

Did you know men will actually spend more on clothing than women? I know it sounds ridiculous, but it’s true.  Men will spend more on an item of clothing because of the quality and how much wear he can get out of that item, but he doesn’t necessarily go shopping every other day like women. For women, we not only purchase quality items but we do it every week..unlike men who will only buy new clothes when they absolutely need to.  Men’s fashion is also the fastest growing portion of the industry. Look how far it’s come from even 10 years ago, men even have their own fashion week now. With men’s fashion on the rise, that means more jobs in the industry and gives you the opportunity to challenge yourself.

If you’re someone who likes a good challenge, men’s fashion is definitely for you!  Why spend your days styling or handling women’s clothing when you do that everyday for yourself anyways?  Do something different and expand your skill set, so if you have the skills for styling men it will be a huge asset in the future and gives you a competitive edge. Fashion is a competitive industry, it seems like every young girl wants to work in fashion in one form or another, but the truth is not everyone is cut out for it and finding your dream job can be difficult.  If you’re looking for a way into the industry and finding it hard to find a job, try men’s fashion, it’s less competitive because not everyone is interested in styling men and there are more opportunities. If you invest in your education and learn how to properly style men, it opens up more doors for you and you will be able to do a job that not everyone can do.

So what types of jobs are out there for men’s fashion?

Well, pretty similar to women’s fashion, you can work for a men’s magazine either writing or styling editorials, celebrity stylist, personal stylist, marketing for a menswear brand, etc.  If you’re interested in styling at all, being able to style men will boost your income immensely! Just think of it this way…you will lose 50% of jobs if you can’t style men. If you promote yourself as a stylist make sure to emphasise the fact you style men as well because not every stylist can.  There are so many opportunities for men’s stylist and I’m not just talking about styling for celebrities or editorials….personal styling is huge! Think about all those male CEO’s and business executives who obviously need to look good and professional being business power houses but do you think they know anything about how to dress themselves?  Take a look at authors, politicians or public speakers who are in the public eye and need to look good….so they hire a stylist. Even athletes need to look presentable and I’m sure they don’t spend their time looking at the latest fashion trends. What all of these men have in common working in different industries and professions is that they need to look GOOD, and will hire a stylist to help them.

Keep in mind styling men is not at all like styling women.  If you’re an amazing women stylist and have worked on tons of photoshoots or films that doesn’t automatically give you the skills to style men and you might not be good at it.  Men’s fashion is a whole different game, you not only need to know what’s in style but you need to know the accessories for men, what looks good on different body types, and also the psychology of men.  You need to be able to understand the way men think in order to dress them accordingly, for example men are very logical thinkers which means you can’t simply say “I like this on you”, you have to explain why because men need to see the “science” behind it.  To convince a man to buy an expensive suit you can’t just say “Oh but it’s Gucci”, most men especially those in a corporate position don’t care about labels or brands so you need to explain the quality of the suit to them and the CPW (cost per wear), and once they realize that this $5,000 suit will last 10x the amount of this $800 suit they will buy it.

If you’re thinking about diving into mens fashion I would suggest getting the proper experience and education for it.  There are men fashion specific courses out there that will teach how to properly dress a man, tie a tie, and how to accessorize.  Like I stated earlier, men’s fashion is about the little things, and having a good attention to detail so crucial to work with men’s clothing.  Even if you aren’t keen on working in the world of men’s fashion it can still be an asset to know HOW to style a guy, or be that person on set of a photoshoot or film/TV set that can do everything and rush to aid if someone can’t tie a tie…trust me you won’t regret it!
